W2512A: ‘Winter Wonderland’ - Painting Snow

Instructors

Snow is more than just white! It has a cascade of colours that we will bring to life on your canvas during this winter workshop. Students will learn some techniques on painting snow and the beautiful winter landscape.

Kelly will walk you through the process of landscape painting using techniques such as composition, value, colour, edges and detail. You will create your own winter landscape painting using oil paints.

A reference photo and demonstrations will be provided by the instructor, with class critiques occurring throughout the workshop. 

Skill Level: Intermediate and advanced — not for beginners.

Course Fee for non-members: $143.75 

Materials:

  • Rectangular canvas (18” x 24”, 20” x 24”, 24” x 36”, etc.) Student comfort level. The canvas can be prepared ahead of time by applying a colour such as pink, red, mauve, grey, etc).
  • Canvas paper (9” x 12”)
  • An assortment of oil paints that could include:
    • Ultramarine Blue  
    • Cerulean Blue
    • Cadmium Red
    • Alizarin Crimson
    • Cadmium Yellow
    • Magenta
    • Sap Green
    • Yellow Ochre
    • Burnt sienns
    • Titanium white
    • Any other favourite colours
  • Various paint brushes of all sizes and shapes
  • Palette Knife
  • Medium — linseed oil, poppy seed oil, or student choice
  • Paper towel, baby wipes
  • Sharpie — black and red
  • Notebook/sketchbook
