W240202: Leanne Baird—Luminous Landscape
A one-day in-person workshop in expressionist landscape painting (Acrylic).
Leanne Baird describes the inspiration for her wonderfully luminous abstract landscapes this way:
"Sometimes when I am out in nature I can 'see' the vibration of creation and everything is just particles of light massing together to form objects. I witness the deconstruction of form into the formless and back into form again. I am inspired by nature; deconstructing trees, hills and sky into colour, lines, form and space."
She uses acrylic paint because "the essential quality of this paint, the fact that it dries so fast, opens the artist to other means of expression apart from realism." She is influenced by artists whose work records their spiritual journeys: "Canadian artists such as Lawren Harris and Emily Carr whose art making was a part of their spiritual journey; Russian born Mark Rothko who developed a powerful luminosity to his work as he worked in abstraction and expressionism; Norval Morrisseau, who originated the woodland style of painting depicting the spirit within humans and animals, and Georgia O’Keefe, who was a master of colour, and changed forever our perception of the intimate world of flowers."

MATERIALS:
Participants should bring their own paints, painting surface, brushes, palette, and palette knife. Studio 201 will provide water containers, tables, table coverings and easels.
The painting surface can be wood panel or canvas 12” x 12” gallery style. Leanne recommends a square format for this exercise. Have the panel or canvas prepped with a light wash of yellow ochre or crimson alizarine.
Other materials needed: a 4B pencil or softer, kneaded eraser, ruler or other straight edge.
Recommended colours are: Titanium white, ultramarine blue, burnt sienna, yellow ochre, green gold, burnt umber, raw umber, some kind of yellow (your choice as I know they can be expensive), alizarine red, cadmium red if you have it.
Leanne will bring a glazing medium and reference photos. Everyone will work from the same photo. Leanne will print off enough for everyone.
ACRYLIC PAINT ONLY! NO OILS as Leanne has a chemical sensitivity that would give her a migraine. Also, we want a fast drying paint.
