Jane paints her beautifully loose, impressionistic paintings using bright colours on black canvas while providing step-by-step instruction. Her students just love her teaching style. Both oil and acrylic painters are welcome. MATERIAL LIST PAINT: BLUE - Ultramarine, Cerulean RED - Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red Light, Cadmium Orange YELLOW - Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Yellow Ochre, Raw Sienna WHITE - Titanium white (big tube) OTHERS - Burnt Sienna, Georgian Yellow-Green and Blue-Grey (This is the minimum but you can include your favourite colours also.) BLACK ACRYLIC (MARS) or BLACK GESSO TO APPLY TO CANVAS before class SUPPLIES: Odourless Mineral Spirits to clean brushes. Brush cleaning container, cloth rags (T-shirt material is best), paper towels. BRUSHES: Long Flat Bristle brushes in various sizes from small, medium and large (e.g. #3, #6, #8, #10, and more). Brush sizes depend on the size of canvas you are using. Again bring your own favourite brushes. A palette knife to clean palette as well as to paint with. CANVAS: Stretched canvas, canvas board or prepared masonite or wood panels are suitable. Bring a size such as square, rectangle, or long. I will be using stretched canvas. Size depends on how quickly you work; if you are fast, a larger size is best and vice versa. I will demo on a larger canvas. EASEL: Easels, tables, table coverings and chairs will be available. MISCELLANEOUS: Sketch book, pencil or felt pen CLASS: Reference photos for the subject of the painting will be supplied. Demonstrations and critiques will be on going as the paintings are worked on. METHOD: We will sketch with a small brush the outlines of the subject of the painting in orange. Then will apply opaque layers of paint in various brush stroke directions and sizes, starting with white and then working to other light and mid values leaving areas black that are to be a dark or mid-dark in tone. The painting is evaluated to see how the patterns of light, middle and dark relate. If all is working then the dark values are applied. Finishing details can then be done. Personal style will be encouraged.
